Question Steering vibration/shake at 68 mph+

I rarely get to do > 65 mph in the DC area traffic, but on a long drive recently I noticed that the vehicle had a mildly noticeable shake to it ONLY when at speeds greater than 68 mph. The vibration could be felt more by the driver (via the steering) than the passengers. My tires are Michelin Radial XT and have had about 15K on them with hardly any noticeable tread wear. Had these rotated and balancd, but problem is still there. Possible allignment issue? Any suggestions to troubleshoot? Thanks.

I have the exact same model 2001 AWD with the exact same tires. I don't notice any vibration until 75mph+ but I do notice that the tires aren't that quiet and they tend to transfer a lot of the uneven pavement to the driver. If you think it's an alignment problem then you should have it checked out, unless you just got it aligned.

I used to live in DC so I know the traffic you are talking about.

The alignment can affect you. I went without an alignment for almost two weeks as I never had time to get down to the place to do it with a lot of work. Yesterday, I got over there after work after calling them, and the convergences were way off. Fixed it and no more vibration of any sort.

I had a similar problem too when I first bought the car. I took it to Just Tires to get the balancing done and they had told me that it was the rims they were bent. I think they just wanted to sell rims!! I was going to take it to the Lexus dealer anyways to have all the oils changed out and I had then look at that shaking. They rebalanced the tires and the problem went away. I went back to Just Tires and got my money back from them. It could be that they did a bad job balancing the tires where ever you took it.

Go to a good tire shop that has a Hunter ballancing machine. Tell them to take re-balance each wheel under pressure, and let them test the rim diameters to make sure they aren't bent.

At least one of the tires is out of round and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, while Michelin makes great car tires, it doesn't seem to be competent at making SUV/Truck tires. They do have long tread wear as you have experienced.
