Has anyone experienced an annoying noise from the steering wheel when turning? It sounds like there's a coiled hose or something with ridges that is the culprit. I have an '01 with 70k on it now.
Thanks for the help.

I have a 01 w/ 18k and it already have clicking noise from steering wheel.
This happens when u turn from the wheel being straight. A tapping noise occur as if two wires are constantly tapping each other. I took it to lexus to check and they replaced the spiral cable(took 4 visits to get this one thing done....they didn't put the steering wheel back correctly). I still get the noise, but less i guess...It also happen after I brought it to them for an oil change....dunno how that's gotta do with this. I also checked some of their used RX and they seem to have the problem too.
If you hear a squeak noise or rubbing noise, check where the steering wheel go in the footwell, there's a plastic boot that you can put some silicone spray on which should resolve that.

I had this squeaking a few times. Every so often I wash out my engine bay with water (I have done it many times and no harm done) along with the underside of my vehicle when I put it up on a rack. The steering wheel will squeak and I have to lubricate down below.
Now, before I ever did washing underneath or in the engine bay (before my racing excursions), I would get a squeak more noticeable inside the passenger compartment especially on cold days and eventually a trip up to Lexus allowed them to lubricate the shaft and no more squeaking.

If you all are referring to the wailing noise only when turning I was told by the dealer that there is a rubber bushing that the steering column goes thru that drys out spray some WD40 or white lithium grease on the bushing and the noise goes away. You can spray it from the inside toward the steering column opening. Its worked for me.

A quick search on steering wheel noise on the RX forums produces a lot of hits - many of them spurious, but these two stand out:
