auto trans shift won't move out of park
My gear shift would not move this morning out of park. I did as the manual said and pressed the button to the left of the shifter. I know I have to take it in for service, but what is wrong with it?

The computer will only release the shift lock if the key is in the "ON" position and the brake pedal is depressed. The problem could be in the brake pedal switch, the ignition, or the lock itself.
The first two are real easy to eliminate. If your brake lights work when you press the pedal, then the brake pedal switch is working. If the instrument panel functions normally, then the ignition is fine. That only leaves the lock, which is either not receiving the computer signal or is failing to respond to it.
