Does anyone know what the purpose of this piece is on the front side of the muffler? See attached picture.

Looks like a counter weight to reduce exhaust vibration and resonance.

I removed that piece and I believe it is a counterweight. There is a another piece not too far away, looks like an inverted flower pot and that is a damper that helps dissipate the sound of the exhaust system...that is also got ditched on my RX...gotta remove that excess weight.

I thought it was a counter weight because it did nothing else. Thanks for the input.

They are harmonic balancers ... They are intended remove a drone sound from the exhaust.
