worth it? is there anything I should know about high-output alternators before I buy this? this should solve my flickering light/tv problems right?

I think I remember you had an Optima Yellow Top with some grounding wires?

I considered it once.

First, you can run both the Optima and a high powered alternator. I know at least one person who does this on a brand Mustang GT at my track. Now, he plans to dump in a lot of stereo equipment and may even get a trunk battery. I have not noticed much difference in times before and after his installation of the alternator.

Second, do you need it...I know several people who run 500 watt systems and work just fine right now with a gel battery and sometimes with grounding wires.

Also take a look for around the same money at the Sun Automobile Hypervoltage system, the MR version.

Well, I've got the yellowtop and that didnt help my flicker problem. Then again I'm pushing 1500 watts plus 4 monitors. Definately gonna order the Sun Hypervoltage and Hyperground. But this just looks good to pass up. I was quoted $500+ for a custom 170amp alternator. This one is 180 and only cost $200.

Light flicker is due to change in electrical load, which will not be solved by high output alternator. A havier battery and cabling may dampen the surge to the light circuit. .. ( a havier battery may require more charging and larger output alternator) .

I would suggest larger output alternator if your electrical load is substantially larger ... audio equipment or you idle a lot (taxi cabs and squad cars). You can also play with alternator pully size (that is if you idle more) but dynamics of the surpentine belt and the outer edge of the pully + tensioner travel has to be accounted for.

[if you dig, I think you will find an old post on this issue]
