After perseverating on the subject for a week now I have decided to keep the RX300 as it is a beautiful car to drive and seems to have no problems currently. So I am going to drop the AT pan and change the fluid. I have read the DIY post and am mechanically inclined so I don't anticipate any problems. But my question is why not just use a solvent to clean the old AT filter rather than replace with what seems to be a substandard paper filter?

Depending on which school you subscribe to ..

1. Reccomeded by Lexus: (sediment based incremental fluid change) [I personally follow this 120K miles with no problems]
The screen is life long [Life being major overhaul service]. The junk essentially forms a sediment and you drain it out through the plug. Megnetic material just keeps growing around magnets. Fluid change over time keeps it relatively fresh.

2. Agressive: Some folks here favor this. The paper filter does realtively better job of filteration. The con is that you MUST replace paper filter before it chokes the fluid supply. By dropping the pan one can clean out the magnets. One can remove hardened sediments as well.

3. Very agressive: 1 or 2 above but also flush the fluid [extract fluid from torque convertor as well]

If you notice your fluid turning bad (color and smell) you can also do multiple drain and fills with hundred mile or so inbetween.

Just remember the fuild type needs to be Toyota Type IV or equivalent [dexron 1V is not].

Last of all no one for sure can make a claim that you will not encounter trans failure by doing 1 or 2 or 3. Or by not doing 1 or 2 or 3 you will encounter a problem. But you must do maintainance as without it for sure you will most probably have problems.
