I got a quote from Tires Plus to change the timing belt and water pump but it was 832.69 Does that seem a bit high?? The breakdown was, timing belt 89.99, timing belt comp kit 118.70, new water pump 139.39, labor 433.50 they are also adding on a 25dollar shop supply fee whatever the heck that is. My car just hit 90k miles so I think its time for the timing belt and such. Does that price breakdown seem reasonable?

As I recall, Lexus did mine for about $900, water pump and belt.

Just be aware that there is 90K service includes timing belt + some items like oil filter etc. So if you got T belt + water pump quote, be prepared to be charged on top of that. The numbers look reasonable.

Take it to a Toyota dealer. Their price for a timing belt is about HALF of what the Lexus dealer charges. After all, it's a Highlander; same parts, etc.

Timming belt cost me $320 at Toyota dealer. $399 regular - 20% coupon. I didn't do the water pump at 90K and don't plan on doing it at 180K either as long as it's not leaking and bearing spins smooth.

My Toyota dealer charges $379 for Highlander's timing belt. I haven't asked Lexus yet.

I'm a little confused. But are the prices from the Toyota dealerships including labor as well as the water pump? I've often read that it's best to replace the water pump at the same time as the belt. Is that BS or is there some truth to it?

It's not BS. It is actually a case of killing 2 birds with 1 stone, since it is easier to get at the water pump while doing the timing belt change, thus saving labor costs down the line.

Every mechanical (moving) component will fail at some time due to wear. Expected life of the water pump is not published/shared information. Lexus does not call out for water pump replacement at 90K. But that does not mean that water pump would not fail soon.

Cost of pump is roughly $150 and the labor is roughly $400. For T belt replacement, the disassembly and assembly is the same, so you can tuck the labor charge under T-belt labor charge.

The T belt needs to be changed at 90K, 180K and 270K ....

If you chose not to premptively change the water pump at these intervals, you run the risk of water pump replacement inbetween at additional labor charge.

ps: Since lot of people replace the pump, we do not have the life data of the pumps. I chose not to replace mine and now am at 115K. If I do get to 180K I will not push it any further.

Okay, so it sounds reasonable to have the water pump replaced at the same time as the timing belt. So will a Toyota dealership's repair shop do the work and will I actually save some cash, too?

Lexus would probably quote prices like that. Might as well go to Lexus and get pampered.

I personally don't plan on changing the water pump during my upcoming 90K. The coolant is crystal clear with no buildup to clog up the pump. So I believe that the water pump will last at least 300K miles.

Shop supply is typically rags and paper towels that are used to wipe things clean. It's another revenue enhancement line item.
