As you can see, the fluid had progressively gotten better color. The third drain looked fairly OK. The right most was the fresh Toyota ATF Type T-IV. It's in a beautiful cherry red color.

You can also see the fluid containers above with my old fluid. (Spilled some of my 2nd drain when my nosy neighbor came over to see what the heck I was doing.)

What's in your tranny?
man, really makes me want to do this. we haven't touched the tranny or fluid in 175,000 miles

It would be interesting to see the fluid on the tranny dipstick...color, composition and smell.

electric13,

What Gomer1 is talking about is removing the 18 bolts that hold the tranny pan (when you do an ATF change) and there are magnets in the pan that gather material.

When you do the ATF change, make sure you drain both the front differential and the tranny pan as I have indicated previously.

If you get the tranny pan off, you will see something like this on the magnet, a little crud (I hope just that).

If you do your major service (every 30K) at your dealer, chances are they've drained and filled your tranny. I just ran into a rough dealer who didn't do jack at my 90K. Now I wonder about my gear oil, brake fluid, timing belt, coolant, etc. (My coolant didn't "burp" after service.)

no, we haven't done the services at the dealership. lexus maint is a ripoff. they cost too much. we've done them at a local maint shop we trust though. what are you talking about coolant burp?

Off topic - After the coolant is changed, the level should drop some because the trapped air would come out to the reservior. It happened at my 30K and 60K, but not at 90K.

I know exactly what HarrierAWD is talking about, as it took about 3 days of monitoring my coolant level after I changed it until the level in the reservoir leveled off.

My neighbor just got their 01' RX with 102k back from Lexus of Chattanooga Monday. $4100 for a NEW transmission. They said they dont use rebuilt trannys. I asked him if he called Lexus of North America to raise a lil hell. He gave em a call and explained how his RX had been serviced at the same dealer since new. How could this happen? etc, etc, etc. They actually credited his CC for $1000 of the repair....All he did was call and they begged him to trade with Lexus for his next new car purchase. Still $3100...whew... Thats a pile o money

He got ripped, a constant user of their service should have gotten the tranny free and maybe paid the labor. Lexus sucked him big time. Tell him to file a complaint with the NHTS board online, add his to the growing list of failures. By the way they list by year and their are a lot of them there. Also tell him to get his tranny fluid changed every 15k miles for now on.....just my two cents worth....

Anyone use one of these to draw fluid up the dipstick tube?

I was thinking about using mine to pull off what easily comes out. Just put back in the same amount that came out. Not a true flush, but if you can't get it all anyway, then just use this to get several quarts out and do it once a week until the fluid looks clean.
