I left the original plastic battery tray in place. If you removed it, that could possibly make most of the difference.

I think I'd rather have the washers in place than remove the plastic battery tray, or putting stress on the battery case by trying to tighten down the front of the bracket.

The gap might have been 3/16" and not 1/4". I didn't measure it. Again, not a real problem as far as I can tell.

One thing for those doing this in the future, I don't think you need to loosen the nut on the rear threaded rod for removal. Once you take off the front screw, it takes the tension off and the rod will easily be removed.

I have a good used battery from my RX, it is about 5 years old and just needs to be recharged. You only pay for shipping
Seriously, you really don't have Walmarts in Virginia?

plastic tray is a must to prevent corrosion of metal below the battery.

Actually, no. The closest is a half-hour drive. I'm close-in to Wash. DC. Down in So. Florida, where I spend the winters, they are all over the place. Not around here.

You're probably better off that you didn't have a Wal-Mart near by. I checked out their batteries back when I purchased mine and decided to go with the Costco instead. The Costco had a better warranty and better specs than the Wal-Mart EverStart. The EverStart also would be a Group 24F battery which means it would actually be a little taller than the Costco (fitment code 3), which could make your problem a little worse. 24F spec is 9" from bottom of battery to top of post. Fitment code 3 measures 8 3/4.
Replacement battery case heights vary a little from manufacturer to manufacturer even though they conform to the same BCI Group spec, like BCI 24F. The Battery Council International defines standards for storage batteries. Their height spec is the distance from the bottom of the case to the top of the post. Some manufactures use a slightly shorter case and a slightly longer post to meet the spec. Others do the opposite. But they all fit due to the small amount of adjustment and flexibility in battery bracket.
I did keep my plastic tray for corrosion protection as mentioned above. I still think the only reason you are contacting the rubber strip is the washers you added. If you don't want too much pressure on the battery just reform the bracket a little before tightening.

Not a bad price for a sealed battery and no modification required with excellent warranty to boot.

Because Lexus does not make battery and you pay for brand not functionality. My factory installed Panasonic lasted one year shorter and $30 more expensive than Coscto battery.

Actually the Costco battery warranty is better, it is not prorated, it is for 100 percent exhange for 3 years. The Dealer battery is prorated. Read the warranty info carefully.

Anyone tried the Diehard Platinum? It seems to be yet another solid state battery like the Optima - though comes in a conventional shape.

The Sears DieHard Platinum appears to be a ruggedized lead/acid battery. The Optima I believe is a sealed gelcell battery. Very different. Unless you need the extreme physical strength and vibration resistance (and in an RX300 I can't see why you would), it appears to me to be unneeded overkill.

From Sears:
The P-1 Platinum Automotive Battery from DieHard features 135 minutes of reserve capacity and 880 cold cranking amps. Its corrosion-resistant high quality tin-coated brass terminals provide reliable starting power in all weather conditions. Its rugged, military-grade construction features robust casing for increased compression and offers superior vibration resistance, making it ideal for off-road applications.

Longer off-season storage time - show cars & classic cars
Ideal for luxury vehicles with multiple electronic accessories
Plates made of 99.99% pure virgin lead
High purity grade acid held safely in place by glass mats; non-spillable design
Absorbed Glass Mat construction provides mounting flexibility & guarantees longer service life
4-Year Free Replacement; 100-Month Prorated Limited Warranty
