What they now make (plastic?) 1MZ-FE blocks in China? Of course this is gonna be a Japanese engine.
The cheapest 1MZ-FE VVT-i AWD (with 70K) from a junk yard is $3300, plus $1000 for R&R (I guess I could swap it on my own but don't have an engine crane and 20 ft ceilings in the garage). They will give me two final quotes tomorrow for factory new long block minus core price a machine shop is buying the old one.
The cheapest assembled long block from a dealer I found is $9,268.05 ($12,357.40 MSRP).

Could not make any pictures of the head since they are rebuilding it now.
Btw, one camshaft broke in it.
Here is the some pictures of the old short block:

Check out scratches near crankshaft:

A wall on the upper oil pan got so scratched so is was easy to make a hole with a small hammer:

This black bracket is difference between AWD and FWD engines:

Wow, thanks. Does that qualify as sludge?

Yes, they said most of the sludge deposited in the head around the cams.

Great pictures on a poor engine.
Are marks left by valves, crashed by pistons and broke the rod during the collison? This is very interesting because 1mz-fe supposed to be a non-interference engine, even if the timing belt is broke, should have no bent valves. Perhaps I am wrong? Here is an animated picture on a normal engine.

I think these dips are normal shape of pistons.
Also, I did a research some time ago turns out all VVT-i engines are interference.

I remember there was some debate on this over in the ES forum as well on interference/non-interference and like TunedRX300, I was also led to believe it was non-interference. I think the confusion may have started over vvti and vvt.

That's one of them that I was thinking about. Something I was reading told me there was a slight bump in power for the ES in 99 and perhaps that was when the changeover was. There certainly weren't any Toyota Harriers, 97 and 98 model years, that had the 3.0 1MZFE, only the 2.2 L 5SFE and later the 2.4 L 2AZFE. The 1MZFE was used since about 94 in the ES/Camry.

If my rods ever go (they will one day if you wait long enough), I am getting some of these, http://www.pauter.com/toyota.htm

Well, I am getting a factory new short block. With stock rods. I guess nobody will replace rods in a brand new block.

Just some info as to cost, the wife's new engine including installation was $13,600 at the Lexus dealership. It took a month and half for the short block to be shipped to Alaska. Head work was done local and actual build process took about 2 weeks. Lexus also included a new water pump but the other externals were from the old engine. Hope it all works out for you from Lexus Corp.

I am just hoping for your sake meetya, everyone works out fine for you.

My uncle runs a garage down here and he is always taking out motors of various vehicles, including high-end BMWs and Audis, and occasionally he and I have to get that one CEL that still keeps coming up or something else (fortunately, everything has always worked out).

Any idea how new block affects MPG?
I am still a bit at loss about rebuilding the head. Maybe I should have gotten a factory new head assembly, not rebuild. Or at least new cams, gears and valve parts. Right now I only know they will replace one [broken] camshaft (out of 4), I don't know if the rest of them will stress another 150K miles.
