I'm 50, but my daughter driving the RX is 15. (You can drive to school solo at 14 1/2 in Iowa with Drivers Ed and if you've had a learner's permit for six months.)

My wife always wanted RX300's for our daughters, but they were always way too expensive. Now they are down to a reasonable amount (for one with a lot of miles) to spend for a teen car. I trust Toyota/Lexus, our dealer here is great, and I try to do as much maintenance as possible myself to keep the cost down.

I met a guy the other day, also I think in about his 50s, that also had a daughter who they had just passed down their RX300 to. Guy also had only the second IS350 I have ever seen in Mexico, so that was also a welcome sight. I grew up in Florida and when I got my learner's it was 15, and full license at 16, but I think they've changed some of the restrictions a bit. I remember my mother and father grew up in Illinois, my mom in the rural part in north central and she was driving the tractor at around the same age and already learning to drive a car around 14 or so.

I believe that in some rural areas (I'm not sure which states), solo driving is allowed at age 14 if you live in the country. Now there's talk about raising the driving age or restricting teen licenses. I would have just died if they had proposed that while I was a teenager!!

Yeah, I would have freaked out, too. Actually, the fact that I turned 16 a few months earlier than the rest of my classmates in high school meant it was easier to ask out a lot of girls...and get into my fair share of street races.

I hope my daughters drive less aggressively than I did at their ages. I was never abusive to the cars, but I sure did some dumb things that could have gotten me in real trouble!

I was an aggressive driver. As soon as I could get my learner's permit, my father had me practicing in the parking lots of a shopping mall, for those of you in Miami you might know what used to be called the Cutler Ridge Mall (now something like Southland Mall). Soon after that, I was advancing to high speed driving and stopping techniques, how to take turns at high speed and all of this was done in a very nice 1984 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas, thing weighed an absolute ton, when you were going at 85, it felt like 55. Kind of prepared me I guess for driving the RX300.

I keep reminding my daughters how much fancier their cars are than mine was when I started driving. My first car was 25 years old, manual steering, 3 on the tree, manual drum brakes, and of course manual windows. I actually had to unlock the doors with a key. (A separate key opened the trunk, which those of you my age will remember!) I don't tell them about the big back seat...

Hey happy birthday lexmex, my grandaughter turned 3 on the 10th, and my other one 2 on the 1st. Merry Christmas Oh by the way I was 48 when we bought the RX and now I am 57....Oh times flies fast, we bought the car to travel to North Carolina to witness the birth of our first grandchild. So you could kind of say, it was her car, hmmmm, maybe when she is 16...

This is a tough one. It's not my RX, it's my wife's...though I put way more miles on it than her. Additionally, I'm 39 but she's 55.

I told her it's her last car, 'cause it'll last that long.
