replace timing belt at 90 thousand miles?
Lexus dealer wants to do a 90,000 maintainence and is asking 1,800 $ -Says he needs to take engine apart to replace timing belt. Is this standard and does the price seem right. He describes it as preventive maintainence..

The timing belt is preventive maintainence and it is do at 90,000 miles but the price seems very high even for a Lexus dealer. Find out what else he is doing for that kind of money. Your owners manual will list other required items (brake fluid flush, oil & filter, coolant change, air filter, cabin air filter and although it's not required by the book most are changing trans fluid due to high number of trans failures). I had my timing belt done at a Toyota dealer for a little over $300.

It seems you were given a number for 90k service that includes Tbelt change.
Even then, it seems tad excessive. Ask for line by line cost and which are items are reccomended and which are optional. I expect the full service to run US$1200.

I just hit 90k miles and I went to the dealer to ask the prices on this. The 90k service should cost around $595 and the timing belt with the water pump change should cost $1180. These prices are straight from my dealer (even though I didnt do it through them) I had my dad take it to his friend who has a shop who did everything for $300-$400. But yeah if you go through Lexus you can ask for a 10% off which isnt that much considering the high amount.

I did my timing belt replacement...along with..alternator belt replacement..flushed all fluids...replaced battery...oil change...all for $700 at my father's friend's house. He works for Toyota in the day and at night he works on cars that friends/neighbors bring in to him...so he can also get Toyota parts cheap.
