Default how to lock the factory roof racks so people can't steal them? (along with cargo box)

I have been using a Thule cargo box on my RX300's
factory roof racks. It has been very simple to use.

Yesterday, I was driving through NYC. (on my way from
Buffalo to Boston) I parked on the street near Macy's.
I couldn't get into a parking garage because of the height
of the RX300 plus cargo box.

When I came back, I noticed a couple of kids(19 to 21?)
were trying to unscrew the front factory racks. I literally
barked at them and they ran away. There were many
people within feet of my RX300, but I guess they didn't
seem to car that a cargo box theft was in progress. (hey,
it is New York....)

I believe they couldn't open the locked cargo box and
decided to unscrew the four ***** and remove the
cargo box completely. I came to this conclusion because
they drove away in a beat-up van...

Only if those two bozos knew that the cargo box was
completely empty, as I left all the contents in my hotel
room.

Is there a way to replace the factory roof racks ***** with
a locking type?

For now, I've taken a steel-cable bike lock and looped it
from the carbo box around the rear spoiler. Yes, it's a silly
look, but that's all I can come up with for now...

Any suggestions appreciated!

wow...good thing you caught those savages before they took off your racks.

you could take a **** to homedepot and try to find a bolt with the same thread. at least then they would have to have tools to remove it.

Thanks! I can't believe I didn't think of that...
I'll go to Lowe's(no Home Depot here) tomorrow and
pick up 4 replacement bolts...

As suggested, set screws would make it difficult as oppsed to easy, Like set screws, doctoring would be required to put locks. There is a slight chance that byestanders may take more notice if agressive breakin is happening.

Hypothetically fast forward to situation where you have locks on. Potentail theives would be tempted yet more and would cause more/serious damage.

I would suggest unlock the carrier and flip it open.... like the open and empty cash registers.
