Angry Bad Taillight on Dashboard

I have always come to this board when I had an issue with my RX and you have always been a big help. I encountered another issue on my RX last week. The symbol on the dash that signifies you have a taillight out came on. So, I go check the taillights and nothing is out. Is the sensor bad? Or does it warn you in advance of the light actually burning out? If so, how do I know which taillight is bad? Anyone have a clue what I should do? Thanks in advance for the help.

I have found it difficult to tell if the top-center brake light is working, when viewing during daylight hours. The first thing I'd do is check all the running lights/stop lights, etc., at night; including side markers. In my case, I found it was the top-center stop light.

The warning light going on for bulbs on their way out has been reported here, but my guess is that a night-time inspection will uncover the problem.

The third brake light is common for going out. A bulb could have alot of corrosion on it causing the light to illuminate

The sensor gets activated when it gets abnormal current draw. A hard failure [bulb popped out], rusted/corroded socket and bulb about to go out can cause abnormal current flow.

Some bulbs have two filaments in them, and it may be hard to tell that a bulb has one bad filament either out or starting to go out.

Get someone to help you with stepping on the brakes. The most common, center brake light, but the taillight "high" when pedal is stepped might be out, while the "low" when just taillight on might still be good. I'm not sure, but I think the license plate light was also part of that "light."

Lucky for me I got the light bulb at .62 cents and spent 15 minutes on it.
