Won't know until you can check the code at an Autozone with an OBDII code reader, which does it for free. If you want to try to to reset the code yourself (assuming it was a temporary Check engine light), see, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...8&postcount=15

Thanks so much for replying...I don't know autozone...I live on Hilton Head Island and we are small which brings me to one more question. The nearest lexus dealer is an hour away...can a toyota dealer work on my 2001 RX300?

a RX300 is mechanically the same as the Toyota Highlander especially the
1st gen RX300 to the 1st gen Highlander. I take my RX300 to the Toyota dealer because it's usually cheaper than the Lexus dealer.

Many mechanics have an OBDII scanner. I have seen many on the net available for under $100 USD and a few under $50 USD. However, try resetting the light first. Might be nothing more than a simple P0171 error with the air/fuel ratio temporarily out of balance. This is the most common CEL error on the RX300.
If you do get the code read please let us know the code and we can help you out in diagnosing it.
vanguy is right, the V6 Highlander of the 1st generation is a clone in the engine except for some Toyota/Lexus badging.
