So what was going to go in its place?

This.

This flexible coupler piece is almost a foot long, though we eventually chopped it down to under 8 inches (you will see why). It has diameter of 2.75 inches. We had though about using an accordion like piece similar to what some other vehicles down here use, but remembering my issue with a certain piece just underneath the engine that my uncle had to weld shut twice and some of you actually had to go to the dealer to get that piece replaced, I though this would be the better option.

An interior view of the piece. For those wondering what VHT is in the background, that is an advertisement on the wall for something we actually use at the track (we called it goma) in order to get better track bite, for those vehicles that aren't AWD. They also make caliper paint.

It wasn't going to fit in that narrow space, so it took a good deal more cutting and repositioning going from the place where the joint was to the front of the resonator. Here we make a cut just after the catalytic converter and before the O2 sensor area.

That also meant the catalytic converter had to come off for a bit.

Here is the O2 sensor in its bung. Keep in mind that is modified piping there. The bung was cut out of its OEM piping here in this thread last year, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=245871

The OEM piping here is 1.75 inches, but I had this enlarged to its current 2.5 inches. The Magnaflow catalytic converter also has a 2.5 inch opening, a length of 16 inches, but the actual body is just 12 inches, so obviously some cutting had to be done.

Now that resonator behind it has a 3 inch mouth.

Here is one final look at this area.

A very interesting shot, the O2 sensor, interior of the resonator followed by the beginning of the y-pipe.

Now, we still had to trim a bit of the front where the y-pipe comes in from the front of the vehicle.

Now it was time for lunch. However, I wanted to show you all the muffler graveyard. Once a month, someone comes in and clears this area out. I am always amazed at how big mufflers can get. Last night we had a little Z Roadster at the track and a guy asked me what I thought of it, and I told him 90% perfect, and he looked at me puzzled and then I pointed to these ugly iron pillowcase, square looking mufflers he had on the back. He got the point.

Case in point, OEM mufflers off of an MK4 Jetta. Hangar 1 in the month of September replaced AT LEAST 50 mufflers off of just this version of the Jetta.

A lot of them simply replaced it with the Arvin muffler that I now use on the back of the RX300. That's where we got the idea from.

Now, we start to do the initial fittings. We chop the coupler down to just about 8 inches.

Now you can notice the coupler on the right side of the photo, but we still noticed we need to cut more. Right here, we are cutting through part of the 3 inch wide diameter extension off of the resonator that attaches to where the 2.5 inch piping for the O2 bung is. And that's my catalytic converter sitting in the back.
