Thanks Harrier. I'll give that shot and report back.

I always do a warm reading. I agree that right after filling the darn thing with your fluid, it smears the heck out of your dip stick. It's a futile effort, really......

I measure how much came out.
I refill with same amount as amount that came out minus 1/2 quart.
I let it rest for about 30 minutes.
I take a cold read.
I drive it to work.
I take a hot read and refill what I ever I need.

I do the same thing again the next morning.

I don't know why but whenever I do drain and fill from a dealer or repair facility, they always overfill......

I just did another drain and fill and noticed that 3.7 quarts came out (and refilled).

I don't get it There can't be that much in there. At least 1 qt should be left in the torque converter.... because the total capacity, I believe, is 4.3 qt.

Anyone with an explanation???

Check out the "stickys". There's one of a tranny pan drop from TunedRx300 thats very complete. The entire system holds 7 or 8 quarts(I think), maybe a little more, so the 3.7 that came out is nornal.

This is the reason we're suppose to do a drain and fill 3-4 times.

Are you taking the plug out of the differential too? There is at least 1/2 a quart in there.

I have done 4 or 5 drain and fills now and the 4.3 thing seems very close to me. The first time I did it I measured what came out and replaced the exact amount. What a waste of time! It needed a little more than what came out, it was probably a little low in the first place. Turned out to be about 4 1/4. Now I just pop both corks and let it all drain out. Put in the plugs and put a little over 4 quarts back. Drive it around for 15 minutes and check. It is always with in a 1/4 of a quart.

I think total capacity is closer to 8 quarts. There is some incorrect info on the net regarding that number.

I know this sounds stupid but.... I don't know where the differential drain plug is. The last time I did a drain and fill, I got it confused with the transfer case (mine is AWD) and didn't bother looking for it. Another reason is: I have this phobia that my car is going to come crashing down on me if if I use a jack. So I hate to venture down there. Basically, I do my drain and fill without lifting the car at all.

It is the one pictured here with the allen wrench in it.

Another shot minus the wrench.

(pics borrowed from Lexmex)

As long as you are just using the 10mm allen wrench it is impossible to screw it up. The transfer case is a hex head pictured here:

You can get to both the transmission and differential plugs without lifting car.

I just use one catch pan and drain the fluid from both plugs at the same time into the same pan.
