Similar to a previous photo, but note the difference in the scratches on the pan.

The reason I picked up this old tranny was precisely in order to be able to salvage parts for an issue that sprang up just like this one.

When my truck is up and running again, I may pay to have a further look at this tranny, but right now the $$$ goes to my own.

Something some of you may have noted is that these are not wide angle shots, and there is a reason. There has already been some work done to my own transmission (modifying) and as I mentioned to you earlier, I can't show these areas, even on the old transmission as Chinito used it to test some pieces he had.

Today, they are also examining the torque converters out of both, as in mine, there was some ugly fluid in there, grayish-redish, not uncommon, but since the pieces are going to be modified, they want to see which one is in better shape.

This is a picture of the Rav4's tranny showing the torque converter in its place.

This afternoon my office received the parts from the United States, and they all arrived in one piece (flywheel, pump and seals).

It is too late to install them on the transmission today as it is almost 5 p.m. local time here, but you can be sure the pump and differential seals will be dropped of tomorrow morning. I expect we will try to reinstall everything either very late tomorrow afternoon or Saturday morning.

My uncle dropped off the pump and seals tonight and we expect according to Chinito to have it back by mid-day Friday. Goes right on top and then they bolt it shut after putting some sealant in there. My uncle is going to work on a Suburban that got front-ended in the morning and then as soon as the transmission is ready, we'll fetch it and attempt to reinstall. I also have my 9 liters of ATF ready, too.

This has become one of the more interesting projects yet on this forum - too bad it's a repair rather than a performance upgrade. Nevertheless it is really amazing to see what lives inside that big lump under the hood. I'm gaining a whole new respect for Toyota/Lexus - and for guys like you a long way from a dealership that can do the work without all of the "factory" support.

Well, you wanted a complete change of transmission fluid - I guess this is one way to do it . . .

Apparently there was a lot of gunk in the torque converter (oxidized fluid) and so obviously I am happy to clear it out. I wish this were just a modification, but unfortunately it appears the transmission pumps in these vehicles are not up to snuff and that jolt on the road took a hit. The one out of the RAV4 was really banged up according to Chinito and that was why we couldn't use it as a replacement (we looked around for some last gen. Camry trannies down in Los Doctores to rip the pump off of, but Toyota vehicles are too new here (only about 6 years in Mexico total) to find something like that.

I have looked at faith in a different way and have my fingers crossed on this one. My uncle is out in Toluca this morning, but if Chinito finishes today as he should, we will attempt the reinstallation today, too. We have the manuals and hopefully all of the bolts (if not, we'll go to Home Depot).

Not much else we can do.

I do have some new KYB GR-2 shocks on the way and they will likely get here Monday or Tuesday.

That is one feature I miss, being able to drain the torque converter like on the Mercedes automobiles. Then maybe the gunk wouldnt collect.
