Will there always be a check engine light if the IACV goes bad? It's not something to replace pre-emptively (is that the word?) before something happens, is it?

Not necessarily on a CEL. Sometime the efficiency can just be degraded on it, where from being dirty or just degradation of the part. If cleaning it doesn't work after a bit then the part needs to be replaced.

The reason it would get dirty is due to the way the crankshaft vent circulation works, pumping back oil, vapor, etc. into the intake chamber (part of the emissions system) and over time can get sticky in there. The problem gets noticeably worse if the oil is up there in mileage and depending on the quality of the oil.

In my case, we can also add the fact that for at least another month I am not running an air filter and that of course will toss a lot of crud in there.

Update.

Well, whoever cares to know. Yesterday I replaced the IACV with a Brand New one from the dealer. Paid $182 for it.

Installing it wasnt that bad. Much easier then replacing the spark plugs on this thing. When I removed the old IACV from the throttle housing I saw a rubber gasket. I was surprised that this $200 part didn't come with this gasket?? It amazes me, it should come with it. At least the parts guy could of told me to get it since its common sense to replace the gasket too. I got lazy and just reused the old one. I hope this is okay?? I did not want to drive to the dealer and get it.

Once I assembled everything. I started up the car and noticed immediately the car idled properly once the engine was warmed up. Before I was idling at 1300-1400 rpm in P on a hot engine.

All in all. I think its better to replace this thing. Its alot of messy work (coolant draining)to just clean it and cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Question: Did you closely inspect the old IACV after you removed it? Was it obviously dirty? Did the butterfly turn freely?

It was dirty, but I dont know how dirty it should or shouldn't be? I did not check to see if the butterfly turned freely. I will check it out later.

For those of you who would like to go the DIY route and clean the IACV, check it out here

Many users have had success doing it themselves..including myself...
