AWD only applies to the rear shocks, as in your case and my case, FWD and AWD have the same design for the front shocks.

Do the front strut bearings (i.e., the bearings at the top that permit the strut to rotate as the wheels turn) ever need replacing?

I didn't replace mine the last time around.

The first item I replaced on my recently acquired 1999 was the front left strut bearing. I diagnosed the clicking/knock sound when hitting small bumps on the road from past vehicles. Yes, 75.00 dollars later from RockAuto and that was the trick. All's quiet with the front left shock now.
