Coasting at idle
this is my first AWD vehicle so I don't know if my concern is just a characteristic of AWD's or if it is abnormal. When I let off the accelerator, I notice my speed begins to drop pretty quickly. In my truck (ford f150) I maintain same speed for quite a while. I'm not sure if this is a weight difference issue between the two or if something is going astray in my gears. Anyone else experience this?
Thanks

Assuming that you have an RX300, is your overdrive kicking in? What is your RPM level at 60 or 70 MPH? There is a slight engine brake on these cars, but nothing that will catch your attention unless something is wrong.

When ever there is a question of drag, the best thing to look at the mpg you are getting [one must discount for the terrain and traffic.

I will tell you what helped my coasting BIG TIME!,was going to synthetic oil in the transfer, and the rear diff.I changed to synthetic Royal Purple last september 07,And re-drained,and installed Amsoil (this time around) this month(march 08)with the Amsoil severe duty 75-90 oil. And the first time, with the royal purple,It was considerably better, coasting etc.Now with the Amsoil,It really coast`s,when I let off of the gas.Probably from doing a drain.and refill, really got out the old gear oil. I actually had to re-learn the difference(to brake) when comming up on stop signs, someone stopping etc.because it is so much different now.

Well, I think I need to flush all my tranny fluids and what not. To start with, when the car is cold, it will take a while to shift gears, will stay on 1-2 for too long, then it starts shifting. The coasting issue is getting more noticeable and it's starting to shift a little hard. It sounds like a pan drop job with filter and all. Do you know if my 2WD is a 17 or 18 bolt pan? for the gasket....

With AWD, and I have noticed this, after changing out the gear fluid in the transfer case and rear differential, there is a noticeable difference in the when switching gears, especially between 2nd and 3rd and the delay is not as much there. I first noticed this on the track back in early 2006 after switching to the Royal Purple gear fluid and my old gear fluid hadn't been changed in some time. However, when I switched to Pennzoil synthetic gear fluid a few weeks back, I have also noticed something similar, even though the Royal Purple we had in there was only a year old.

Mid 90`s mercedes does that too. They claim it`s for the catayletic (I know I butcherd that word) converters to reach operating temp more quickly.Probably for emission`s. Via going closed loop faster.(when the computer fully takes over)

I posted a similiar thread nine years ago.
Had nothing to do with a Lexus, I wanted to know why my F-150 coasted for so long, unlike anything I had experienced.
I do a lot highway driving, and maintain a safe following distance.
I took satisfaction in driving in highway traffic without hitting the brake.
I could control my pace with the acelerator or lack thereof.
That all ended when I got my F-150, it ran on and on acelerator or not, endless coasting, well not endless but, I was applying the brake in highway traffic when I never had to before.
I have since just become used to the nature of the beast.
