This may be no-no but in the interest of sharing knowledge here is an exceptionally detailed post on antenna replacement.

Just a side note on this topic, I replaced the antenna mast on my 99 last Friday, and I SWEAR to you, everywhere you read it states the gears on the nylon cord need to face the rear of the vehicle, so that is how I was doing the replacement. Turns out my nylon gears needed to face to the FRONT for some reason in order to function correctly. I had it to the rear, and you would have thought I was trying to rip the motor apart by asking it to pull the antenna up and down. I scratched my head for a minute, looked at the old one and noted that the gears on the cord faced opposite as to what I was doing. I swapped it around worked perfect and smooth right off the bat. I have NO CLUE as to why mine is "backwards" however I still get a gear noise from the motor towards the end of retracting the antenna, so I have to replace the motor anyways, perhaps then I can observe why this is an issue for me. I just found the whole thing weird, lol....
