Out of Warranty
My wife loves the backup camera on our RX so much she wanted one on her minivan. No problem - at Christmas I got her a backup camera from Pep Boys and installed it myself. Mounting to the license plate frame and tilted slightly downward, it requires a 12v supply from the backup light circuit, but it has a wireless connection to the monitor we placed and wired above the rear view mirror.
It works quite well - my only complaint is that you have to manually switch the monitor on (I'm going to reconnect it to the backup light circuit) and you have to set the exposure yourself by pushing a button several times until the picture is illuminated to your satisfaction. In daylight it works quite well and has a good field of view, but at night you have to push the button 3-5 times got get a picture. Once set, the picture is pretty good, although in low light it is pretty grainy it is still useful, picking up objects that even the camera in my RX misses.
With dark tints on your windows, particularly at night, it's easy to do several hundred dollars worth of damage to your car by backing into an unseen post, not to mention the hazards of backing over toys left on the driveway or a wayward child. Although nothing substitutes for a good eyeball on the area behind your car, these cameras are well worth the investment.
