The dealer actually won't even admit that there is a filter in there.

I would just do a series of drain/fills DIY and save the gasket for another day. I think I am on my 5th or 6th now and my fluid looks perfect like it just came out of the bottle. I'm doing it now with every oil change which is only twice a year at about 4k miles. It's overkill but too easy to not do IMO.

ok buddy i will i guess drain and fill only buddy wow what a huge difference on tranny oil color...!!!! thanks for example and godbless.... also on these pics does harrier mention how many miles for each? thanks

I don't think he mentioned how many miles in his post: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=289113

I just did it once a week which was about 100 miles or so. I was going to just drive around for 10 minutes and change it, but I decided to get some miles in between. I think the fresh tranny fluid has the ability to work a little bit as a solvent to clean up the insides some. So I let it do it's thing for 100 miles or so and then dump/fill. I started out with dark brown/red fluid and was pretty close cherry red by the 4th change. Doing it 2x a year now is part of my regimen. It is probably the easiest fluid change to do, much easier than an oil change.

I would not bother measuring what came out either. Just pull both plugs and drain (my pan will catch both at the same time). Add about 4 1/8 to 4 1/4 quarts. Drive around for 10 minutes or so and check it. You will probably add another splash and you are done.

i got a quote from local maintenece shop before they told me 70 dollars for dropping the pan and drain and fill, called today drain and fill was 60 dollars but then i told them 70 bucks was for dropping the pan then he changed his mind... i hear many folks say tranny oil change is easier then oil changes, why is it more costly to change tranny oil vs oil change? do you have to put rx on stands and what jack you use to lift rx as it is lifted... thanks i thought i saw a sticky somewhere? could save me 60 dollars for daughters necessities and etc... i like llearning about alll these stuff i could imagine leaning from this forum saving more money as a do it yourselfer and use money for other things is nice... thanks buddy

Tranny fluid is more expensive than motor oil. Most cars take more tranny fluid than the RX for a drain and fill. Most require pan removal for a drain and fill. I would think that prices are higher to compensate for materials and labor on the average car. Most people are scared to death of touching the transmission. On most cars this is a job that is messy and sucks. I wear disposable gloves when I do mine and don't even get dirty.

Do wear some eye protection when you first pull the plugs. The fluid is very thin and tends to splash a little. I doubt it would ruin you to get it in your eyes, but I did accidentally splash it on my glasses last time.

No, you do not need to use a jack to get to the plugs. There is plenty of ground clearance as it sits. I still usually jack it up just to make it a little easier, but definitely not necessary. I have done it several times without the jack. You can use the front cross-member with a floor jack if you want to.

Compliments of Lexmex:

Engine air filter, cabin air filter & tranny drain and fill are all super easy on this car. Brakes are easy too. Transfer case was not too bad, rear diff is still on my list. The guys on here like Lexmex do some awesome DIY tutorials to make many of these jobs seem like you have already done them before.

wow, draining is a breeze, a funnel at any Auto parts store is the only additional equipment needed as the fluid is added where the dipstick is. Under 30 minutes and you would be done....4.3 qts of fluid and that would be the total cost...take fluid (old ) back to your local autoparts store for recyling.

ok correct me if i am wrong i was reading several DIY threads on drain and fill on auto tranny, i was going to have pan dropped because of contaminants demo's but would rather just do the pan drop when gasket goes bad, and do a drain and fill instead as many folks say it is easier then doing an oil change.... correct me if i am wrong as i want to make sure that all goes smoothly knowing myself i am nearly broke all the time want it to be done correctly can't afford to things wrong... is this correct
remove tranny drain plug then transfer case plug until tranny oil is done comming out, put new crush washers on the plugs after cleaning plug, then put both back on then add 4 quarts atf fluid on at dipstick drive 5 miles then check levels if needed to add more add more to dipstick then complete? also what are the correct jack and jack stands i should buy for rx for future maintenance such as brakes can someone show me pics also pics location where to have jack lift spots thanks? these DIY are amazing making it more affordable to own a lexus... thanks for all your help... i can imagine how much money will be saved do to all these kool DIY threads...

Remove the tranny plug and front differential plug (transfer case is different). As long as you are using an allen wrench to remove the plugs you have the right ones.

The washers IMO can be reused several times if they have not been over torqued and distorted Part # is 90430-18008 they are maybe $1, so pick a few up and use your best judgment. I have 5 or 6 changes on mine and they seal fine.

Use a floor jack where the blue area is.

Put the jack stands under the frame for safety.

Add a little over 4 quarts and drive for 10-15 minutes. Check and add as necessary. You know to check it with the engine on right? If you do need to add some do not try to check it again immediately afterward. The tranny fluid will drool down the dip stick tube and make it very difficult to get a decent reading. Let it settle for a while before checking again.

thanks for your help you have close up pics of the 2 bolts that needs to be removed? the dealership gave me 2 washers i never knew you had to change them was using same as always... so basically you drain those 2 hex plugs put back then fill the a/t dipstick with 4 quarts? and it feeds the tranny? thanks

Did my second drain/fill a couple weekends ago. Fluid went from dark brown to medium red, I'm almost there!

For drain, the RX is high enough that you dont need any jacks to lift/support.

All you need is the hex key and dont forget to troque the bolts properly ... It might help if some one would post the speced torque.
