Question A/T temp.light

Has anyone ever had their temp.light for the transmission come on?It seems strange that some, maybe even most of these failures are heat related.Yet no one ever mentioned that their temp light for transmission overheating ever alarmed them.Is it possible the temp sensor is too high ie.240 degrees or something?

Not mine, no temp light and it failed 40 miles west of Salt Lake City on vacation....Took it back to Salt Lake with no overdrive...They couldnt resurect it, but flushed it and said have a nice trip home.... $4300 later at my local Lexus stealership....Still planning on moving the aux cooler and switching to Amsoil....

what do you make of this? Are these lights basically useless then?Or like I mentioned before, maybe the temp.doesn`t get high enough for it to come on.

You know, 240 degrees is a lot... my scanguage on my Ford F150 shows the fluid at 160 degrees most of the time and when towing with outside temp at 105 degrees it reached 195 degrees. And that was with 6000lb trailer. I would love to put a temp guage on my Lexus, hmmm, next project....

Their you go,pull out the non-functioning temp light sensor, and replace with a guage sending unit.

The scanguage II is what I have for my Ford truck, but different vehicles have different extra feature guages. You program the scanguage to measure the Ford tranny temp...works great. I could try switching to my lexus and see what is available. I could call the vender and see if they plan to add temp to the scanguage for the Lexus RX300 or Camry...

ScanGuage needs to crack Toyota/Lexus specific codes in order to be able to display the trans temp. They haven't been able to do this for any of the Japanese cars yet.

Even when I had my unfortunate issue with a cracked tranny pump last year and lost a significant amount of fluid, didn't have this light come on.

Silly question ... but where is this temp light? Did it get introduced in certain year.

Maybe I should read the owners manual...

On my 2001 it's on the instrument cluster between the "battery" and the "windshield washer fluid low" indicators. It illuminates and stays illuminated when the key is in the on position, and goes off once the car is started. It's also shown in the 1999 service manual wiring diagram, so I guess it's on all the years.
