Default How long will you keep your RX 300????

Helo everyone,

Just curious....How long is evryone planning to keep their RX...

I bought mine 2 years ago with 62K......I now have 75K.....I am looking ahead to the 90K service and plan to keep the car forever..

It is currently my wifes main car.....I am thinking of "retiring" it to our second home when it reaches 150K or so......It would see very limited miles in our second home...

I would then get a newer model for my wife as she loves th car...

What about you guys???? Forever??? Do you have a mileage traget???

Mine is in the same situation, (2001 Sports edition) it has done 80k miles. Went for safety check last week and Lexus gave me list of brake work that needs to be done. Their quote was 3 times what I will be getting it done for. This is my wife's SUV and she now she looking for a 2005-ES330, so I will take it over and keep it for as long as it is running, which be many more years. The resale has dropped but to find a similar condition one is really hard.
What helps is Lexus Forums such as this one has many people with tons of advice on how to maintain it.
So .. Keep it as long as you can

As you know owing a car has many aspects.

Financially: As long as repair costs do not exceed the residual value, one should keep the vehicle.

What would you replace it with: ? [known used vs unknown used or new with financial outlay]

Availability of parts: As you get past 10yr in age, finding parts becomes difficult.

Who is ready or more important NOT ready to accept the vehicle as a hand-me-down: With teenagers in family (or younger siblings), one should keep in mind that soon some one will need another car.

Appearance and condition: If the condition and state of the vehicle is great/good then the only thing you need to watch out for is the dated styling.

For me, my '99 with 130k+ miles is a keeper. Pay off other debts and travel are higher on my list.

What is important to you is the question?

As long as the vehicle is serving its purpose with low maintenance cost and can get parts to carry out repairs, I'll keep mine except for a change of taste and upgrade.

It depends how long parts are readily available, for one thing. I don't put on many miles (I now have a 2002 with less than 65,000 miles). I guess 15 years (165,000 mi) sounds good if parts are still readily available until 2017.

I kept my 1972 Mercedes-Benz diesel for 19 1/2 years, so 15 years won't be a record for me.

Mine I am going to keep for as long as I can. It's going to get less use as time goes by as I intend to add most likely a Lexus car model to the mix at some point, but I don't see the effort I have put into it as a waste and I still have some projects to go.

I plan to keep my 2002 Lexus RX300 as long as it performs with normal/expected maintenance and expected repairs. However, the price of gas is getting to be a bit much. I use mid grade gas. What about you? Do you use regular gas? If so, how is performance? I live in CT and gas is crazy high at 4.50 for mid grade. Thank you.

If you have more than one car, then the choice is obvious to use the one that consumes the least gas and has low per mile maint. cost.

We have had other threads that discuss if the option of buying something new/different.

You can use regular unleaded,(states it in the manual)but the millage will go down some.I went from premium to regular unleaded (mostly due to cost)and about 70-80% of the RX owners use regular unleaded.I noticed a 1.5 drop in millage, and less powerful on the highway.Other than that, seems okay.I think it depends on the quality of the fuel you use as well.I.e.Joes gas & deli vrs.Shell,BP etc.

I have two kids with another coming, so my '99 RX fits the bill still. We're not quite ready to switch over to a mini-van, so we'll stick with the RX and continue renting minivans only when needed for extended family trips.

We will probably keep until it runs to the ground, or something major (i.e. transmission) goes on us. We can only see replacing it with the next gen. RX if it comes with a "child useable" third row, and even then, we'd wait for second or third model year cycle vehicle. We would not buy first year.

Thus far, only our coil packs seem to be failing (two thus far) that are non regular maintenance things.

I have 130k miles on the clock. It is wife's car and it is very solid car. I will take over it when wife wants to change car. I will keep it for another 10 years I guess.

My 2001 AWD almost 188k miles now. It is a beast. Just changed all belts. Only concern is the noise possibly from the exaust pipes under. Anyone has any idea about the cost to replace them?

With gas moving closer to $5, I may have an excuse to retire it.

Usually it is a leak in the flex coupling. Mufler shops can cut the old one and weld the new one in. Lexus Flex pipe most probably cost more. Lexmex just welded over the leak.

With that many miles, (when I get there), I would simply ask the mufler guys to use their product.

Do the math on changing vehicles. There have been a few threads on this subject. The depreciation loss is not recovered by savings in gas.
