I left the intake manifold attached when I changed them on my 99. I did unclamp that rubber thing from the air intake, though, and move it out of the way. My hands are just small enough (apparently) to reach around there. I had to use a socket with a rubber gripper to loosen the rear plugs, and different lengths of extensions. The rubber gripper stuck on the plugs when I installed the new ones, so I had to install them with a socket without a rubber insert.
Lexmex is right about the thread -- it's very helpful. Allow yourself lots of time, and save those easy three front plugs for last!

I also was able to change them without removing anything but the rubber intake piece- it's not easy and you have to be patient but it can be done and like the other poster said, save the front three for last so that you can coast downhill rather than having to crawl uphill. LOL

Done this too. Take your time. Make sure you have different extension size. I didn't remove my manifold but I remove the intake tube and PVC.
