Default What is this!

I was looking at my 2003 Lexus RX300 the other day from a distance and noticed something hanging underneath that seemed awfully close to the ground. I peeked underneath and could see what looked like a pipe pointing downwards but couldn't figure out what it was. (I have a bad back and couldn't really crawl under to see it in detail. ) I took it to a repair shop and the mechanic reached underneath and pulled out what looks like a weight attached to a bracket that had rusted through. He said it was a weight and is apparently attached to some part of the exhaust system and is intended to keep it from vibrating. (I think that was his explanation but he didn't actually put the car up on a lift and just did me a favor by looking at this quickly. I am going back tomorrow to have oil change and to further explore a check engine light that has been intermittently coming on and off (I think this one is an oxygen sensor but I have lived with it as the gas mileage has been very good so I figure there can't be too much of a problem.) Sorry for the rambling. Does anyone have any idea of what this weight is and if it should be remounted.?

I don't know how to resize pics but here it is. I never noticed any difference with it off.

Thanks for the info. It seems like no one really keeps theirs if it falls off! I doubt there would be much resale value :-) Could use it as a bar bell for my kitty.
