Gaz's solution worked for me! I know it's $100 you'd rather not spend, but it solved my problem.

before buying a new cap, check this; take the cap off and see if the stem on which the sensor float rides up & down. If the stem is not firmly attached to the cap, push it up into the cap. It should just snap in. If it does snap in, you should have your solution at $0.0 cost!
