Default 90k Service - Ripped off or decent

90k Service done at Toyota- Basic 90k - $569.95
Synthetic oil change
Change engine air filter
Replace coolant
Replace iridium spark plugs
Rotate Tires
Drain and refill tranny
Inspect:
Brakes, discs, drums, lines, hoses
Drive shaft boots
Steering linkage
Drive belts
Body and chassis nuts and bolts
Fuel line connections
Exhaust/mountings
Additional Services & Costs
Wiper Blades (3 total - 2 front, 1 back) - $40
Timing Belt
Parts - $104.26
Labor - $650
Fluid Changes & Fuel Injection - $278.88
1) P/S Fluid
2) Brake Fluid
3) Fuel Injection (every 30k)
Rear Bulb - $3
Drive Belts (2 belts)

Total = $1631.09

Grant total OTD with 15% Discount = $1391

The killer was the timing belt, but it has to be done eventually, right?
I've never had the P/S changed or the brake fluid for that matter so I figured might as well get it done now. It was time for the wiper blades to go, and it was important to me to get the tranny serviced and the iridium plugs replaced (though I know I could have gotten more life outta them)

What's the verdict? Not bad?

The timing belt labor is kinda high imo. I work at a Toyota and I believe belts for "cars" is like 259? I believe, and for SUV's / Trucks its more... but not anywhere near 754.26.

That is not a bad price. I need my 90k service too and called around to Toyota and Lexus dealerships. Lexus dealers wanted something around $1800 for 90k service and timing belt. Toyota dealers said no they cannot service my RX . Which Toyota dealer did you go to?

The $3 for the rear bulb sounds reasonable. I recently had a stop-light bulb go, and a pair of no-name bulbs at AutoZone was $6.

It sounds like you should have small maintenance bills for a few years now.

seems reasonal for "dealer" charges. Much of the work you could have done yourself and saved $$$. My timing belt change from an indy shop was $365.

Sounds fair for dealer service, definetly cheaper than Lexus. As mentioned above the timing belt does sound high. The Toyota dealer did mine for $399 - 15% parts and labor. Also your plugs wern't due to be changed for another 30K.

Thanks for your opinion, guys. I figured Lex would be more expensive and I could save a bit by going to Toyota. At least I have the peace of mind now and got the "big" service outta the way. I've been doing the minor services myself up to this point - oil changes every 5k, engine air filter, and cabin air filter, IACV fix etc..

Indeed, the timing belt cost was really high. It's $430 at the Lexus dealer here, $370 at Toyota (with coupon) and $350 at an independent. The Lexus worked out to be a better deal for me because of the free Lexus loaner that I needed to get to work quickly.

Also the Iridium plugs don't need to be changed until at 120K. So you got ripped there, too.

Other items seem reasonable for a dealership.

Let's itemize based on individual services at independent shop:

Synthetic oil change $45
Change engine air filter $15 (do it yourself and save $10)
Replace coolant $60
Replace iridium spark plugs (don't need until 120K atleast)
Rotate Tires (ho hum, $20 tops)
Drain and refill tranny $69
Inspect: (all free, the car is up for the oil change anyway, this is all visual)
Brakes, discs, drums, lines, hoses
Drive shaft boots
Steering linkage
Drive belts
Body and chassis nuts and bolts
Fuel line connections
Exhaust/mountings
Additional Services & Costs
Wiper Blades (3 total - 2 front, 1 back) - $40 (about right, but I do mine for $12 myself)
Timing Belt $350 tops, including labor
Fluid Changes & Fuel Injection - $278.88 (i can live with this)
1) P/S Fluid
2) Brake Fluid (bleeding?)
3) Fuel Injection (every 30k)
Rear Bulb - $3 ($1.95 at Walmart, so $3 to do from dealer ain't bad)
Drive Belts (2 belts) $150 parts and labor

So, your real total is about : $1031 from Joe down the road. If you factor that the $1391 includes the spark plugs and a loaner vehicle for a day or two, that's not too bad.

I pay $32 for 3 inserts at my dealership, so $40 installed is a good ideal IMHO.

Aftermarket inserts/blades are cheaper, but they don't work as well and last maybe 3-4 months. My Lexus inserts have consistently wiped very clean and lasted about 1.5 years despite the harsh climate here.

I pay $12 for all three, not each, on clearance at Target. They're Michelin and the full blade, not just insert, and they last over a year too. I'll put them on just when spring starts, so they go through the summer fine and get one winter in, then I change them over again in Spring. Can I got 1.5 years, probably... but then I get off 'cycle' and they're only $4/each. so I spoil myself...

This is the thing with repairs, when the vehicle is under warranty, nothing needs repairing, when it's out of warranty, the dealer/shop wants to replace everything. I'll bet you that if some manufacturer out there had free service up to 100K, they would follow the owners manual and not change anything until 120K. 90K maintenance is really for "babying" your vehicle and playing it safe. The timing belt will last you into 100K easily and actually, I'm pretty sure they're rated to go 100K. The spark plugs, if OEM, are iridium, so they're good easily into 100K also. I don't think that after doing your brakes, you'll need much else on there that can't wait until 100K.

Belt - fine
Spark plugs - fine
Brake fluid - fine, unless you feel any ill effects
Transmission fluid - fine
Rear diff - fine, you can wait until 100K

Hmm... I think Michelin blade usually sells for $15-$18 each at Target. So maybe I'll have to wait for the next sale.
