Default Cranking noise driving from a stopped position.

Hello Everyone,

I have noticed that every time I leave from a stop position. I start to accelerate and hear a strange cranking almost whinding type sound coming from what I think is the transmission area. Not sure what it is. But it is very short and only does it for about 1 - 2 seconds then goes away.

Car currently has 168,000 miles on it. And this is really only the first problem I have had that is of a major concern to me. Just wanted to see if anybody else has heard or had this problem before I take it in to a bunch of places and pay up diagnostic fee's :P

Thanks for any feedback

I had a similiar noise just before my trans went. If you are handy, I would drop the pan, replace the filter and put in fresh fluid. Your filter may be clogged and the noise is your pump straining to get fluid.
Or is it possibily the engine pinging under load? Carbon build up or knock sensors could cause this. If you think it may be pinging try a tank of high octane gas and see if it changes.

Yikes! I hope it's not problem (A) and it's more something like problem (B). Great feed back thanks. I will try the gas first and see what happens. I have been putting low grade gas for about a year now. (due to gas prices of course) And it started happening around March of this year. Went away but came back.

After I change to high octane I will try and get the trans-fulid flushed out. Haven't done that since around 85k. I'm @ 168 now. So I guess it would make sense to get that done.

You should run fine on 87 octane. But sometimes if you have carbon buildup or if the knock sensors are starting to go, a higher octane will compensate and reduce the pinging. Trying high octane will at least help troubleshoot where the noise is coming from.
As far as the trans goes, I would be more inclined to do a drain and fill and change the filter rather than doing a flush. Your noise could be a clogged filter starving the pump. My trans failed shortly after a flush. Do a search here on trans flush and draw your own conculsions.
