Default fog lights always on?

is there a way to rig it so that the fog lights can be turned on w/o having the headlights activated? right now the low and/or high beams have to be on in order for the fogs to work.

this stems from the need for DRLs, which has malfunctioned on our 00 rx300 and is too costly to repair (dealer has quoted a 4-digit estimate).

I seem to recall that this was discussed a number of years ago. If my recollection is correct, I think that somebody said that this configuration (foglights on, headlights off) was illegal in the US, That seems crazy to me (since the whole purpose of fog lights is not have the headlights on during a fog), but then they're not really fog lights anyway (not yellow). There was another thread, again as I recall, that said changing the fog lights to yellow was also illegal. Crazy world!

Some states have a law that low beams must be on with fog lights. Some towns here enforce that I know of a co-worker got pulled over early in the AM still dark out driving to work was advised and handed a summons for improper light usage. He always drove with fog lights on and no headlights.

fortunately for me i'm in canada. my vw gti has the fog lights running as drl's, so i'm going with the assumption it's okay. i'm tired of blinding everyone with my HID low beams in the daytime.

ben, your hid`s shouldn`t be blinding anyone,as long as your leveling system is working properly.

I know this is old, but the wires and connectors for both the low beams and fogs are the same. If you swap the wires you can turn the fogs on without the low beams on.
