original cross over
I might be biased but the 1st gen RX300 styling seems to have held up well. I look at many of todays's SUVs/crossover and they all seem to have the RX300 shape. My black 99 after a wax job does not look dated at all and it's a 10 year old car. What are your thoughts?

I would have to agree. Some say the RX300 sort of created its own market segment, the midsize luxury crossover. I think Lexus hit one out of the park with it. Didn't it become their best-selling vehicle right away?
I don't really like driving SUV's, but I like driving this because it's the perfect size. My old GMC Typhoon was a good size (and fast), but a much less refined vehicle!

My only issue has been, there are too many on the road.
I did not care for the chopped back and the clear lights and the sharpened nose. Aluminum of the center console was a step back in my books.
I am sure there are plenty of folks who would say just the opposite too.
I have not seen the '10 model in person.
At this time, my RX has more value to myself than any one else would say (including the insurance company).

I'd certainly agree, if you look at vehicles like the the current Kia Sorrento, Honda CR-V and Hyundai Santa Fe you can see a lot of their styling cues were taken directly from the RX300.

Original and still the best

For me, the only thing that made my '99 RX look dated was the taillights, with the round orange and black in a red housing. I remedied that a few years back by installing LED taillights with LED blinkers and it's like I have a brand new vehicle.
I've seen the 2010 in person and it's an evolutionary design over the 2nd Gen RX and doesn't solve any "issues" I had with it (rear liftgate, 3rd row, handling) so it's a "no go" for me. It's got nice gadgets for sure, so the people happy with the 2nd Gen RX will be more happy with this one.

When Lexus got into Luxury market, one question was, how would they evolve the models. The well established never make a radically different change in appearances and try to morph gradually.

I agree 100% that the Rx300 doesn't look too "dated". Maybe it's because i drive one, but i still think it's one of the best looking SUV's out there.
I don't know if it's because of the mirror tinted windows or unique mirrors, but whenever an Rx300 drives by, i can't help but stare at its true beauty

I'm in complete agreement.
My brother made a good point. If I were to paint the bottom of my (wife's) white 99' it would be hard to tell it from a newer model. Not being two-toned is a quick way to distinguish between generations.
I think the round edges look better than the harder edges of the newer models, and this is especially true of other car makers. I can't stand the direction that domestic makers have taken. Hard edges are simply not natural!
My black 98 4runner looks much better than subsequent generations in my opinion. It actually looks more elegant to me, again because it is curvacious and not hard-edged.
