How can I determine if my RX has the dreaded oil sludge problem?

The dealer I went up to a for a few years in San Antonio (I'd stop by whenever I came up from Mexico City since it was a rare occurrence) also mentioned to me that if I had been using synthetic and changing 5K (and I was using Mobil 1 then) no reason to take off the cover. Also keep in mind that the engines are going to look different based on how you drive, type of oil you use, how long the oil has been sitting in the pan versus removing the cover immediately, etc.
