How can I determine if my RX has the dreaded oil sludge problem?

The dealer I went up to a for a few years in San Antonio (I'd stop by whenever I came up from Mexico City since it was a rare occurrence) also mentioned to me that if I had been using synthetic and changing 5K (and I was using Mobil 1 then) no reason to take off the cover. Also keep in mind that the engines are going to look different based on how you drive, type of oil you use, how long the oil has been sitting in the pan versus removing the cover immediately, etc.

ive got 131k on my rx im gonna check it for sludge this weekend because im gonna replace the valve cover gasket so it will give me the oppurtunity to check for sludge build up i also use mobil 1 reguarly i highly recommend it so do all of the tech's i work with at the toyota dealer im working at.

what is the reason for replacing the valve cover gasket? is there a leak?

well if im gonna pull the valve cover off why not replace the gasket as well i mean u already take the time and effort to pull it off it couldnt hurt putting a new one on there as well haha.
