Default Bad Solenoid on RX300

I am considering buying a 2001 Lexus RX300 with 120,000 miles. The current owner says the check engine light is on but that it runs "perfectly." He told me that it's a bad sensor. When I asked him which sensor it was he said it was in the transmission and that the code indicates that solenoid E is bad. He is asking $7,000 for the vehicle. Should I invest the money in replacing the solenoid or are more extensive repairs needed? The owner also hasn't changed the timing belt and water pump which is a $900 job from the dealer.

While there is aways the possibility that you could get away with replacing the solenoids, I have never known that to be the case. You are most likely in for a transmission rebuild. Prices vary from 3,000 to 6,000. Do a search on this forum on "transmission failure" and see what I mean. Or google it.
here is a link to a current discussion on the same issue:

If he hasn't replaced the timing belt by 120,000 miles, I'd wonder how regular he was in changing the oil and other stuff like that (including transmission drain and refill). The recommended interval for the timing belt replacement is 90,000 miles (or 5 years, but I don't think anybody uses that time interval).

I had the same condition.
Changed the gas cap from Autozone $7.99 and solved the problem.
May clean the sensor if the new gas cap does not solve the problem.
I have 112K on my 2000 RX.
Still drives good.
