Transmission - drain and fill or strainer replacement first?
I am considering doing a transmission drain and fill several times on my 02 FWD (105K), and I was wondering if it makes sense to drain and fill 2-3 times and then drop the pan and replace the strainer(filter) or replace the filter first?
Any suggestions?

Drain and fill two times and then replace the filter on the 3rd drain and fill.. You will then get more particles out of the system that that are in suspension in your filter, since not all of the fluid comes out during a drain and fill.

Exactly ..
Near clogged filter is the best filter to catch anything. [clogged filter may cause other serious problems but it filters the best]. So do the drain fills and on the last drain -- drop the pan and replace/clean filter as you wish.

I am about to do the same with my 99 RX300, with the exception that I am installing a "remote(external) transmission filter" before I start the drain and fill so I can change this filter as I do the drain and fills to get most of the crap out of the transmission. After about, or around the third I will drop the pan and change out the metal mesh screen in the transmission. Any thoughts?

Yep, been there done it. I have an external filter on mine. works fine. Mine is made by perma cool. uses a ph8 or equivalent. It alone adds about a half quart of fluid. Next moving the tranny cooler to cooler places...

Or just put an atv fan on it,and leave it where it is.iv been thinking about that, but my trans. actually works better when its hot.(dont ask,i cant tell you why)

I put the tranny filter on after the warranty period for the last tranny. By the way the second tranny was defective, sos that is why I am on the third. No changes in performance or shifting. I thought about the atv fan, but havent pulled the bumper off to see how much room there is. my thought was move the cooler to the front of the car.
