I will say Lexus designers have done an excellent job of giving this vehicle perfect proportions to make it a joy to live with on an everyday basis. By sharp contrast the Acura MDX whose width is hyped to death over and over again as an advantage is really A MAJOR DISADVANTAGE. A friend of mine who purchased an MDX finds this vehicle very hard to park, drive, manuver etc. because of it's ungainly width.....BEWARE!!.....and it's quality/reliability (even though it's above average) is not nearly as good as that of the RX
The other choices you mention the ML320 and the BMW X5 have a bad reputation for having very bad build quality and reliability which should be reason enough to strike them off your list and the X5 is way overpriced as well
The only major flaw that the current RX 300 has is it's extremely wide turning circle. There are strong indications that the redesigned RX (due either this fall or latest before mid-2003) will remedy this (The Highlander - RX's clone - has already remedied this)
Botttom line - you can't go wrong with the excellent RX......but if you have the luxury to wait a year or so the redesigned RX will be EVEN BETTER ......and the good news is it will not grow much larger, if at all
......Of course, I'm assuming you don't need to cart along a schoolbus full of passengers or need to carry loads of plywood and construction materials ON A REGULAR BASIS, as the RX is not intended as a vehicle for these ambitious transportation missions. In fact if these are your needs, then I would recommend buying a minivan which gives much better flexibility and functionality than some of these SUVs which are really "minivans-in-SUV-clothing"

Ok, if i had that extra cash, i would have gotten the X5-V8, no questions asked. For the price, u cant go wrong with the RX.

advantages
Other than price, (and weight) the RX has ABSOLUTELY NO ADVANTAGE over the X5 nor the ML.
If you can afford the extra cost buy the X5 3.0, or step down slightly and buy the ML320.
But, the front seats of the RX are much better than those in the ML.
