I know we've beat this to death. However, I was bored one night and went searching through numerous transmission parts and located two "strainer" part numbers. One, a metal strainer, the other, the paper one that is supposed to be the replacement strainer.

From there I went to numerous online parts dealers who sell OEM and managed to fine one that had both part numbers in stock. Expecting to get an e mail saying they no longer stock that part number I get this via UPS:

What is odd, the packaging contained a trace amount of fresh ATF. The screen looks new and has no ATF in side of it. I'm contacting the dealer to make sure this is a new strainer.

**Update: Just heard back from the dealer....The fresh ATF is used to keep the strainer from rusting.**

The way to tell if a part is old or new, is to look at the mounting holes. As bolts/screws are used to hold, they gouge the metal.

Oil is used for metallic parts to prevent oxidation (rust) ... all things return to their natural state [ore].

Now about the filter ....

I am not sure if it is a good idea to go to the screen mesh. The manufacturer now recommends the element (paper) and typically the change is driven by reducing cost or in this case a finding that the screen is passing fine particles. [some thing that is reported by people who had the transmission overhauled.]

Interesting about the possible lower straining capabilities salimshah. I can confirm that there are no marks from the bolts and the dealer states it's new.

The mesh in this thing is very fine, I do wonder about the pump debate with this having possible better flow.

I'm guessing that they switched for cost or even just a different vendor that makes all their filters with paper. I would think if the filtering ability of the screen was in question they would have the dealers replacing them with the "upgraded" filter as part of the routine maintenance. Instead most dealers will never replace the filter and just do drain and fills or use their flush machine. The dealers around here do not even acknowledge the existence of a filter at all.

Last week i changed the ATF fluid with metal strainer. I bought it from Queensborough toyota dealer for about $45.00. I drain ATF fluid from transmisson cooler and pan. I will see how it works?

Lucky find, maybe they never used their inventory of the part, did it have a pack date?
I wouldnt hesistate using it on mine as I have the purolator canistor filter on my vehicle.

My local dealer was the same way, they didn't acknowledge there was a filter until I pressed them. Then they said: Oh! You mean the strainer? Then they said: We never change them and don't advise you to.

Didn't see a pack date, there is another label below the OEM label in the picture. That label just has my order info on it. I asked them more info as to how many they have and to expand upon the availability. They just e mailed me back and said:

"I stock the part# 35330-06010 I have 1 on hand, but the part# I sent you ( 35330-21011 ) I would have to special order again."

Completed this morning, not a huge difference. The whine in first gear that is not supposed to happen but has been there since 40K is a lot quieter but still present. Same smooth shifting with the Royal Purple ATF.

mine whines in 1st gear too,and i have heard other rx`s sound the same.who told you its not supposed to do that? i think its just the nature of the beast.

Seen it around the boards here a few times and on the LOC boards.
