Default dealer refused to sell me '08 navigation DVD because it won't work in '01 RX300?

I stopped by the Lexus dealer earlier this evening.

The service advisor took my keys and came back 10
minutes later. He advised me that the '08 navigation
update DVD will not in my '01 RX300 with factory nav.

I was puzzled... so was the parts manager that I talked
to yesterday. They found a memo(not sure if it was from
Lexus or the dealership itself) that said they shoudl not
install the '08 navigation update DVD in the '01s....

This is the first time that this money-sucking dealership
has refused to take money from me! (in their defense,
I only went because the parts manager offered me the
nav update DVD at only $200)

Has anyone here ever installed the '08 nav DVD in a '01
RX300?

Thanks!

The 01 has totally different generation hardware from the later models. There may be a known incompatibility of a 2008 nav update for your generation hardware or, more likely, Toyota have decided not to keep updating the older generation hardware systems and the 2008 updates are only for the newer generations.

Yes, your GEN is different. Search eBay or try another dealer that has the older one's in stock. I got the 2008 update for my 02' GS430 which has the same NAV as yours.

Toyota/Lexus Gen 2, 3, and 4 Nav ECU's are not hard drive, they are DVD! The Gen 1 and SOME 5 ECU's are hard drive based. The Gen 1's are in 1998-2000 vehicles.

The latest Gen 5 ECU are DVD in most 2007 and newer Lexus vehicles. However, they are hard drive based in 2007 and newer LS 460, 600hl and LX570's.

Contact Sewell Lexus: http//www.sewellpartsonline.com/ They are very knowledgeable on this issue.

I think you'll fine that you'll need part number: PT219-GEN23-08 for Gen 2 and 3's.

PT219-GEN23-08 is exactly the DVD that the dealers
refused to sell me. Just finished checking with all
four local Lexus dealers. The parts dept people at
all four told me not to buy it. They said they could not
guarantee that it will work.... or worse, mess up my
current navigation computer. This is despite the fact
that their nav update data sheet clearly states that
PT219-GEN23-08 is compatible with 2001 RX300's
navigation system. One parts manager suggested
that "since your RX300 is so old, Lexus is not obligated
to continue map update support beyond 6 or 7 years after
the car's manufacturning date..."
Is hinting that my
'01 RX300 should join the "Cash For Clunkers" program?
At EPA combined MPG rating of 18MPG, the RX300 certainly
qualifies for $4500 credit, unfortunately....

I have contacted Lexus corporate office and they
promised to get back to me in a few days......

In the mean time, are there any 2001-2003 RX300
owners who have installed the PT219-GEN23-08
update DVD without any problems?

Thanks!

For a little more than the cost of a new disk, I bought a Gen 4 in a crashed 2005 Prius for $400 which had a new disk in it. Plug and play baby....I'd recommend this to anyone who is having problems upgrading or experiencing drive motor problems in their Gen 2. If you have a Gen 2 you can upgrade to Gen 3 or 4 and just plug and play.
