2001 RX300, 18MPH, qualifies for "Cash For Clunkers" $4500 credit...
I have just been informed by my Lexus dealer that my 2001 RX300 qualifies for
the "Cash For Clunkers" program. Apparently the EPA's combined MPG rating
for this vehicle is listed at 18MPG, the minium to qualify for the $4500 credit...
Has any other RX300 owner taken advantage of this program yet? If so, how
does your Lexus dealer destroy the engine after they take the vehicle in?
There's a Nissan/Infinit dealer next to my office. Last Thursday, I was walking
by and saw them pour sand and glue into the engine and runnig the engine
until it seizes....

That's cool that they offer to give you a credit. Although personally i would not be able to part with such a vehicle...
Hell i am sure you would get 6K $ for a 'quick sale'. But again personal preference i suppose? And unless the car is nothing but a headache i wouldn't want to give her up!

It is trade-in value OR clunker-value (if you qualify) and NOT both.

Just saw a news article in the Philly news paper about a couple trading in their 2001 Caravan for a Toyota Sienna. They got $3500 for the clunker but I would thought they could have gotten that much if they sold it privately. I would assumed the the clunker credit is not on top of the trade in value.

Hasn't the federal money for the program supposedly run out this weekend? So, doesn't matter now if you haven't taken action... it's over until the taxpayer gets fleeced again for their money to pay for this program.

The idea is to get them off the road and have more fuel efficient (less polluting) vehicles on road ... the delta in the MPG (new vs old) determines the amount of $ you get.

I honestly believe that it's better for the enviroment to
fix up these old clunker and keep them on the road.
(assuming they can pass emissions and safety tests)
Making new cars will do more harm to the enviroment...
That's just my personal opinion.
IIRC, the US Congress just passed another $2 billion
for this program... so that's $3 billion dollars so far.
Basically every man/woman/child in this country is
forking over $10 each so people with old clunkers can
buy new cars.... $10 x 300 milllion people = $3 billion
(hope my math is correct)
Wait... didn't we just bailout the auto industry recently?

You ask how they destroy the engines of the cars they take in on "Clunkers for Cash" I think they take all the sludge that is taken out of the Toyota/Lexus engines and put it in the CfC cars and that destroys 'em in a hurry. LOL

A quote from Consumer Reports explanation of the program: "So if your old car is worth more money than the credit, it is not a good candidate for this program."
I can't imagine any RX being a canidate for the program. I think your dealer was insulting your intelligence when he suggested the program for you.
