Default Shifting Question?

Sorry if this is a silly question but my Rx is my first automatic transmission car...

When you guys talk about transmission fluid (synthetic) and say "the car shifts smoother" .....are you referring to the movement of the stick from P to R to D.....OR the actual sense of the shifting as one accelerates in drive...

i am considering synthetic ATF

I have understood that to be the amount of jerk/lurch one would feel as you go through gears .. very much like as you shift from 1st to 2nd in a manual. On higher gears the lurch/jerk gets dampened due to lower torque change.

Another thing to keep in mind, mos tof the stuff is a feel and not measured scientifically. The feel difference can also be worn-used/new and not necessarily due to composition differences. I am not down playing the synthetics, but simply trying to point out how to interpret the views.

I have stayed with Toyota type IV and regular drain and fill. 30-45k miles replacement schedule. Note typically I am not hauling lots of weight and always let the trans warm up by driving slow (2.5k rpm or below) till the higer gears are released by transmission. Very infrequently, I park on slopes with the tension on the transmission. Also I come to complete stops, between D and R.
