Default Need some brake job info RX300 2001

I have been asked to do a brake job on a 2001 Lexus. My mom's car. Need the following things:

1:Minimum thickness for front and rear rotors:
2:a diy for brake job on this car if someone could point me to it.
3:What size/type of sockets I'll need to remove calipers/pad carrier/rotors (last one only if needed).
4:If there's anything special about retracting the caliper piston in the back (like the special tool needed on my Ford Mustang for instance), please tell me about that. I have a limited amount of time to get this job done since I live 600 miles from her, and would like to have all my ducks in a row before I start. Trying to save her some money.
5: tightening torques for relative fasteners.

I am extremely well versed in brake jobs on several types of BMW (since that's what I own) as well as VW, Ford and some GM, but know nothing about Lexus. Since this is the only job I'll likely ever be doing on this car, I'd prefer not to buy a manual. Any direction you guys could provide would be great.

Welcome to CL.

There is list of sticky to help us all find DIY's

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...x300-diys.html

Look at posting 2.

For silky smooth braking, people opt to have the rotors turned. I am against that ... if the rotors are warped, I would replace them .. but that is me. {I never bothered to look for min spec on rotors**.

Since you have done brake jobs before, you will find RX to be the easiest. One bolt to undo for the front and it flips out.

Thanks for that. Very helpful. I can't tell fully from the pictures in there, but if I remove the pad/caliper carrier, does the rotor then just slide off the studs, or is it fastened in some way?

It just slides. You might need to tap the back of it in a circle pattern gently with a rubber mallet or something to get it to pop off.

haha famous last words! Hopefully I won't run into any serious problems of that nature lol. Hopefully gentle taps are all I'll need. I've seen rotors so rusted on that even strong persuasion takes hours to break them loose. This is a California car so hopefully rust is at a minimum.

Buttt ,, this is Lexus where the water drops on the rotor turn into rust. I have not seen any hub rust so much & so fast on other vehicles.

I popped off my front rotors SO easily last weekend using that DIY tip about threading the bolts into the holes in the rotors. I couldn't believe how easy it was!

I think I understand what you are saying, but what size bolt? M6, M8, etc. . . I ask because whatever I use on this job, I'm going to bring with me -- rather not bring my whole collection of crap with me if I don't have to lol.

8 x 1.25 will do the trick.

You can, clean the rust off and spray with some good quality heat resistance paint.

Thanks guys. I had those suckers off in no time thanks to the M8x1.25 bolts suggested by two of you. It got new pads all around and I had the front rotors turned, which appears to have gotten rid of the roughness under braking. The rear pads appeared to be original, while based on wear I'd guess the fronts had been replaced once before (car had 120k miles on it). Whole job took me about an hour not counting the time to go down to the machine shop and then buy myself a sandwich while waiting for them to get the rotors turned.

Sounds good. Hope you lubed the caliper slide pins.
