Aftermarket Stereo for '02 RX300
I was hoping someone might be able to offer some guidance as I try to replace my OEM stereo in my 2002 Lexus RX300 (no nav) with an aftermarket variety. Here are the questions I have...any and all advice and suggestions is greatly appreciated.
1. First and foremost, can it even be done? Both my local dealer and Crutchfield told me that I am not able to replace the OEM stereo b/c it contains controls for the heating and cooling, etc.
2. If it can be done, what specifically do I need to purchase (other than the aftermarket device itself)...wiring harness, adapters, radio kit?
3. Any suggestions for a good, middle of the road aftermarket device for this make and model? Nav is not necessary, but I'd consider it if the price were right.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

it can be done..yes..but I wouldn't recommend you do it..
why would you?..I did THIS with my stock oem headunit
I have 6 aftermarket speakers installed and a 500 watt 15 inch sub
I have 2 external Amps for the door speakers 50 watts RMS per speaker
I have XM and HD radio and an iPod input via the cd aux hack
I have everything I need...
The stock oem head unit uses 7 pre amps to an EXTERNAL 7 channel amp in the backseat of the car to power everything so it would be a huge pain... you can do it but I do not see why you would bother.
so my advice...
Dont bother, work with your current setup and make it rock like I did
It didnt take long and didnt cost much to do what I did.

The head unit and CD changer in the RX300 are actually pretty good. The main speakers aren't too bad either but the "subwoofer" is a waste of time. A good, specialist (emphasis on "good" and "specialist"), car audio store will be able to integrate an Aux input and a subwoofer amp/speaker. You can do this yourself with a little DIY acumen, but if you're not so inclined, let the experts do it.

it can be done. thee are several members who have completed mods with aftermarket stereos but, understand that it will take modification of the dash to do so. my mod was the least intrusive and left the dash with it stock look

There is a company called metra that makes aftermarket radio kits for first gen rx300s that are touch screen but tie into the factory look and give you full climate control.
