Timing belt change tools and tips
Just finished changing the timing belt, 2 Idler pulleys, water pump, power steering belt and AC/generator belt. Thanks so much for all the DIY posts on this subject. They really helped.
I purchased the following tools and parts. All worked well.
1 ea Schley Products #64300 crankshaft pulley holder $60 1 ea Lisle 45500 Harmonic Balancer Puller (pull crank pulley) $20
1 ea Pittsburgh 66390 pulley holding tool.(hold cam pulleys) $15
1 ea Aisin Water Pump and Timing Belt Kit with Koyo Idler and Tensioner Bearing $220 (All of the parts seemed to be the same as the OEM parts I took off.)
My RX300 has 99K miles. The old water pump drain hole had the beginning signs of a slight leak...Glad I replaced it. I have replaced the coolant with Toyota Pink and Red every three years.
My crank pulley bolt was the most difficult part of the job. The Schley Products holder did a good job holding the crank using a two foot breaker wedged into the drive shaft and steering arm. No matter how hard I pulled with a 2 foot breaker with a 1 foot extension the bolt wouldn't budge. I used a 2 lb hammer and 1 foot extension and gave the nut a few hard hits. This did the trick. I think I needed to break the thread locker compound that was on the threads. I am sure a good impact wrench would have had the same effect..
I had to unscrew the right threaded shaft that goes through the aluminum motor mount that is located between the two timing belt covers in order to get the water pump out.
Let me know if anyone wants to work a deal on the tools I purchased. They won't do me any good for the next 10 years.
