I change my oil every 3-4,000 miles using a Toyota/Lexus filter and typically Castrol GTX conventional oil. I usually purchase the Castrol GTX in 5-quart containers at Walmart.
As long as they are using oil with the starburst symbol on it, you are fine changing it every 6,000 miles.
I used to change mine every 3,000 until I read an article in consumer reports on an oil test they did. They took two fleets of NYC taxicabs and drove them both for 60,000 miles. In one group they changed the oil every 3,000 miles; the other group every 6,000 miles. They then tore down the engine and measured all the critical tolerances. They saw no difference in the two sets of engines.
They recommended using any oil that has the universal starburst symbol on it which states the oil meets minimum oil industry standards. I use whatever's on sale or Autozone oil.

If you plan to use synthetic, Mobil 1 synthetic oil is good enuf and is available everywhere. amsoil is better but it doesn't mean your engine will be 100% problem free with amsoil. it is expensive and they are not available everywhere.

I'm using Penzoil Ultra 5w-30, and the RX is running amazingly smooth. It's never run so smooth, it also has zero consumption.

I've been using dino 5W-30 (Castrol, PYB, Mobil C5000)...and now I'm going to try Castrol Syn Blend. If no leaks (103K miles), then I'm moving to full syn. I like Lex Mex's idea of German Castrol 0W-30, but I'd try anything, esp. if Pennzoil Ultra is smooooooth.

Reason I ask is because I bit on it a few weeks ago. I was going to wait for the Pennzoil Ultra Euro to enter stores, but at $28 at Walmart for a 5 quart jug (and having a gift card), I took a leap of faith. So far, my MPG stays in the 19 mpg range, where it was in the high 18 range, and we have hot weather around here. I haven't had that kind of consistency in a while even though my daily driving has gone unchanged in its pattern. Yes, super smooth.

I am going to be interested to see how it handles out to 5000K or so compared to the Castrol 0W30 (which I ran out to 7K). That longer term is going to be either what gives it a thumbs up or down, particularly with any consumption I might see. I do realize it's going to have it's cleaning cycle just like any other oil.

In addition, we have a V8 06 4Runner that is waiting for it's oil change in a few thousand miles and I'm going to see how this oil handles.

The Castrol 0W30 is still in my book my favorite oil...for now.
