I buy the largest 3M filtrete(?) filter from home depot, $15, take it apart and make at least to A/C air filter inserts. Not that I couldn't afford the $50 for the one at Lexus, I simply don't like dealer price gouging like this.
And many, many other things.
As I have said before, I don't think a single marque service shop can be financially viable in these competitive times, (maybe even never) and especially not with such a relaible product.
Were I a Lexus dealer trying to maintain a service bay I would suggest out-sourcing the service to a nearby Toyota shop rather than earning a deserved reputation for gouging my valued customers.

You can also use the activated charcoal pre-filter that's sold for Honeywell HEPA filters. It cost about $10.00 at Home Depot or Lowe's and you can make about 10 or 15 "pre-filters" for your existing A/C air filter. You just cut it to fit and place it over your current filter. It pre-filters the air, so the Lexus filter last a lot longer and it removes more dust/pollen without reducing too much air flow.
It works great and it's easy.

Living in Mexico City with my RX, I am constantly making new filters. I replaced my engine air filter with a K&N. The Toyota filter did not last even a month, before it got clogged full of smog.
However, I have noticed that the Toyota glove compartment air filter is washable. I did this once before purchasing furnace filters from a nearby hardware store.
