Default Buzz from engine compartment

Hi,

'02 with 185,000 miles has just started to develop a buzz from the middle right back area of the engine compartment. Sounds electrical not mechanical but not positive about that. It is colder now and it seems to disappear after it gets up to temp but it might just reduce in volume.

Thanks for the help.

Are you hearing this while the hood is open and you have the motor on or are you hearing it while sitting inside of your RX?

Loose or deteriorating heat shield vibrating while engine is still cold. Heats up and expands after warm up and goes away is my guess.

If it sounds electrical it might be the brake booster (not sure what it's exactly called) pumping itself, my GS does this and was told by the dealership it's the ABS pump "pumping"

Looks like it is the transmission. Wasn't so much electrical as a whir. The pump might be bad. At least that is what the tech said at the dealer, which they say means they just replace the whole transmission!!! $4.5K

I would ride that until it stopped running and in the mean time try to track down a good used or rebuilt tranny. Take time and do alot of research and you could save some $$$.

Why replace the whole thing if its only the pump? I'm definitely going to ask around for other opinions.

I replaced my tranny pump after an accident back in 2007,

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...went-bump.html

The the rest of the tranny was fine but if they are smart (and often times the dealers won't open up the tranny to check) they'd open it up to see if there are any debris or other internal damage (good idea when you have a tranny out). If the pump is the case, I'd recommend taking it to an independent tranny shop unless Lexus is offering to replace the tranny for free or under the cost of what it would cost an independent to inspect the tranny and replace the pump. They have to open up the tranny any way to replace the pump.
