Default Going to give a different oil a try

I had a good question posed to me over the weekend, if my current oil, Castrol Syntec 0W30, wasn't available what would I be using instead?

There are two oils that I like other than the Syntec 0W30 and that's the Amsoil 0W30 and the Pennzoil Platinum 5W30.

However, I am going to be a guinea pig again on my next oil change coming up soon and plan to run...Pennzoil Ultra.

I've read a good deal and talked with at least two friends who have tried it and feel this one may be worth a one time shot.

http://www.pennzoil.com/assets/PENNZ...thetic_PDS.pdf

but the one I'm considering given close characteristics (at least of information I can find) to Castrol Syntec 0W30, http://www.pennzoil.com/assets/PZL_U...5W30_01_10.pdf

I did consider a few other oils in the mix including two I've experimented with before (Lubro Moly and Redline) and two I haven't (Motul and Neo).

Comments?

Lexmex,

I am currently using Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 myself. I just changed the oil in the wife's RX a couple of weeks ago. I have another 5 quart jug laying around for the next oil change. After I use up the Pennzoil Platinum, I am thinking of trying out the Pennzoil Ultra. I am curious to see what all the hype is all about from the BITOG website.

Keep us posted on how ya like this new oil. Thanks, Lexmex.

It's tough to tell if the hype is surrounding the basic formulation or the Euro spec. Other people I talk to on the net said they are more interested in the Euro 5W30 (the specifications seem close (from what I can find)) to that of Castrol 0W30, but I don't have any inkling to try the Ultra 5W30 non Euro spec.

It's kind of the same way I feel about Castrol Edge. It's a nice oil, but it hasn't surpassed Castrol 0W30 in order for me to give it consideration. The Euro spec oils seem to be exactly what I want and need.

I know on BITOG they submitted some questions to Pennzoil regarding the new oil and are supposed to get answers by the 19th.

Another oil I am thinking of trying, this time gear, is the Redline 75W85, http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=40&pcid=4 as currently I am using the Royal Purple 75W90. That's still a bit off to do that as gear oil can go a aways.

I wouldn't be the guinea pig, but it seems in this economy we haven't had a whole lot of new oils thrown at us as of late, probably because R&D is in the dumps.

I just purchased some Castrol 0W-30 (GC) for our MB E350. I still have some Mobil1 0W-40 laying around. So once I use up the Mobil1, I will slap in the GC into the Benz. I hear it is a great oil too.

I am using Amsoil 75W-90 (FGR) in the front & rear diffs in the RX. I was using Mobil1 75W-90 since Feb 2004. I wanted to try something different this time 'round and I put in the Amsoil in Sep 2009.

Best of luck with whatever you choose to go with, Lexmex!

I still favor gc but the specs that I have seen on that ultra euro 5W30 were to tempting to ignore
