Default I see transmission issues but...

I see that there is a common transmission for the 4 speed automatic transmission mated with the 1MZ-FE 3.0 L engine. I also see that this engine was used in other vehicles such as the avalon, sienna, and the es300. I was wondering if the transmissions from these other vehicles can be implanted into the RX 300. The reason I ask is because we need a new transmission for my dad's RX as do many people that check out the RX 1st gen forums. If we can get by with replacing the broken transmission with a cheaper one that isn't as infamous for breaking down.

If this isn't the case, is there a certain year of transmission we should stay away from (for example the problem was fixed in RX 300's made after 2001 or something)?

Side note: He paid $3,500 for a 2000 RX300 in need of a new transmission and the vehicle has 138K miles on it. It has pretty much no options. Decent deal if he spends ~$3,000 on a transmission?

Thirty seven views and no reposnses?

I saw a couple threads down that the highlander transmission works if you get the 2wd transmission and the rx needs a 2wd transmission. I will look into this but I don't know if the RX my dad got is AWD or FWD.

There may be similarities in base design and sharing of components, but you can never be sure if the shell (that includes the mounting) to be the same [unless some one has (un)/successfully tried it .... I guess that is what you are trying to find out and no one has answered.

Even the AWD/FWD transmissions are not swapable.

Yea thank you Salim. I was just wondering if there is a common swap that members have tried/currently do in place of just buying another RX300 tranny.

There are such things that go on in the honda and nissan worlds and was just wondering if there is anyone on here that has had success with different swaps?

thanks for your help.

Okay after some research it seems that......

the U140F (AWD fx300) was also on the

* 2001–2003 Highlander (4x4)
* 2000–2003 RAV4 (4x4)
* 1999–2003 Lexus RX 300 (AWD)
* 2009– Matrix (2.4 L)

the U140E (FWD fx300) was also on the

Applications:

* 2002–2004 Camry (V6)
* 2001–2003 Highlander (V6)

gear ratios: 1st 3.938, 2nd 2.194, 3rd 1.411, 4th 1.019, rev 3.141, final drive 2.814

In case other people want to know their options when transplanting transmissions.

Go to www.car-part.com. From this website you can look at local junkyards and find what you are looking for.

I'm pretty sure the 4 cylinder transmissions won't work, same with the 2WD transmissions.
