DIY: Repair broken reluctor ring (tone ring)
#46
## Background
My reluctor ring (tone ring) was broken on rear driver's side.
Initially I found the wheels would chatter or grind when I was braking and turning. It took a while to figure out and in fact I took it to the dealer who told me I had a broken reluctor ring also called a tone ring.
There's a lot of threads on the symptoms of a broken reluctor ring and I don't want to rehash all of it here.

Yo Bros,
I was referring to the original post above from 81Corolla " My reluctor ring (tone ring) was broken on REAR driver's side"
I have a AWD 99 RX, 120,000 smiles. As my REAR L/S wheel bearing is howling very loudly for about near a year. In reading 81corolla's very detailed step by step procedure (click on above) on page 19 of "his" procedure (NOT the factory manual) it seems to me that I could knock the bearing out with a large truck size socket and replace the new bearing first packed in Dry Ice over night too shrink it for easier installation. This (if it works) would save a Poop load of work dealing with rusted bolts.
This also would save having to schlep whole frigging assembly to a shop monkey to press the new bearing in possibly assBackWards.
My question was: As to the possibility of changing the REAR bearing, was directed to Mr. 81corolla as he in the process of repairing his (REAR) reluctor ring was up close and personal in the bearing area.

the answer to the difference between before 7/2000 and after 7/2000 is a matter of diameter on the axle that bolts to differential/ measurements for before are 3and 7 16ths center to center and 4 and 3/4 across the middle center to center on the after it is slightly smaller 3 and 1/4 center to center and 4 and 1/2 acoss the middle center to center/ found the hard way but only spent 75 dollars on a good used one

Hi, I have 2000 RX300 that was manufactured prior to 7/2000. According to my mechanic, the correct Lexus part # for the rear axle is 4234048011. Could someone confirm that a comparable Toyota replacement is part #42340-48011. Also, based on this thread, reluctor ring is the same regardless of weather or not the car was manufactured prior to 7/2000. Could someone confirm that for me as well. I looked at reluctorrings.com and they only have one available option.
Thank you very much.

If your RX300 was manufactured prior to 7/2000, then 42340-48011 should be correct part.
Simba1 explained the differences between the two axles. My RX was actually manufactured in 7/2000, so taking measurements is the only way to know for sure which axle is correct.
Reluctor ring is the same for RX300 '99-'03.

They are not seeing it at the Toyota dealer because this part was never used on a Toyota vehicle. They could probably special order it for you. Are you looking to source the part or have a dealer get the part and do the repair?

Lexus part is over $1000, i am trying to figure out how to order a Toyota highlander equivalent.

I'm pretty sure that there is no Highlander equivalent. So you are stuck with an expensive OE part or a reman. Rock Auto maybe?
